Title : Agroecology and sustainable agriculture for resilience livelihood of marginalized and vulnerable people

Agroecology is an integrated approach that simultaneously applies ecological and social concepts and principles to the design and management of food and agricultural systems. Small farmers in Nepal are traditionally following subsistence agriculture practices. The low productivity of subsistence agriculture is perpetuated by a vicious circle of problems from low productivity to underemployment to low income and back to low productivity, thus increasing food insecurity of the poor households. The small and marginalized farmers as a part of climate change adaptation practices in agriculture in Nepal have now started practicing agroecology practices that has enhanced resilience of people, communities and ecosystems, leading to sustainable food and agricultural systems. Diversified agroecological systems are found more resilient with a greater capacity to recover from disturbances including extreme weather events such as drought, rainfall or floods, and to resist pest and disease attack. Agroecology has thus been a promising approach for the small marginalized and vulnerable farmers in Nepal to enhance their socio-economic resilience and reduce their vulnerability for increased food security by reducing producers’ vulnerability to economic risk. Humans being an integral part of ecosystems, it is important that ecological and socioeconomic resilience go hand-in-hand.
