Water use efficiency in irrigated agriculture has gained significant attention from the research community as water scarcity becomes rampant globally. Conventional irrigation systems rely on heuristic methods in order to schedule irrigation which either leads to over irrigation or under irrigation. In this study, we develop a soil moisture dynamics model from the agro-hydrological water balance model using state space modelling. The model will be used to design a model predictive control algorithm for real time irrigation scheduling decisions. Simulation relations indicate that soil moisture dynamics model provides a satisfactory approximation of the process dynamics. The model is helpful for real-time irrigation scheduling decisions with a spatial and temporal adaptability


Mr. Erion studied Agricultural Mechanization and Irrigation Engineering at Busitema University, Uganda and joined Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology for an MSc in Civil Engineering with Irrigation and Drainage Specialization. He then joined the West African Center for Water Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture at the University for Development Studies for Doctoral Studies in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering under the mentorship of Prof. Felix K. Abagale and Prof. Geophrey K. Anornu. He is presently and Assistant Lecturer of Water and Irrigation at Makerere University in Uganda. He is a member of ASABE, ASCE and ICID.
