Title : Nyampinga Coffee Cooperative and promotion of Socio-economic Development and Peace-building in Rwandan families in Nyaruguru district, Southern Province Rwanda.
Coffee is one of the most important traditional cash crops in Rwanda. It is the main source of income for a number of 500.000 households. Coffee farming is an important activity that highly contributes to the national economy, member’s families in terms of employment and income, especially for women in rural areas. Cooperatives increase production and improve the socio-economic households’ income. Jobs are created especially for women and girls during the production, the harvesting and the treatment. Thus, the socio-economic welfare of coffee growers and women in particular is improved. It reduces poverty among coffee growers’ families. Some research results revealed that coffee cooperatives used various strategies in peace building such us: working as new schools and families, working together and having common understanding, clubs for peace and visiting each others. Cooperatives have also used loans and access to the credits “Ibimina or rotating funds”, managerial skills, vocational training with the purpose of enhancing and empowering women in terms of socio-economic development. These was evidenced by having adequate shelter, human rights, access to the medical insurance, school fees for children, undertaking entrepreneurial activities, unity and reconciliation between members and participating in the income distribution of coffee and other sources of revenue. Coffee cooperatives play an important role in peace building, through the resolution of interpersonal relationship and social cohesion. These were evidenced by the improvement of communication, trust and reduction of suspension between men and women. This study is intended to analyze the Nyampinga coffee and promotion of the socio-economic development and peace-building of Nyaruguru farmer’s families in Southern Rwanda
